Varzuga belt is an intracontinental paleorift system formed during four stages: prerifting (2.55-2.30 Ga), early rifting (2.30-2.20 Ga), late rifting (2.20-1.95 Ga ....

The MCR probably formed as part of the rifting of Amazonia (Precambrian northeast South America) from Laurentia (Precambrian North America) and became inactive once seafloor spreading was established. A cusp in Laurentia's apparent polar wander path near the onset of MCR volcanism, recorded by the MCR's volcanic rocks, likely reflects the rifting. The Midcontinent Rift System is a 1,500-km (900-mi) long Middle Proterozoic aborted rift extending from the Lake Superior region southwestward into Kansas (Sims, 1990). The rift can be divided into three distinct segments (Dickas and Mudrey, 1989) separated from each other by accommodation structures.

1 Introduction [2] The Mid-Continent Rift System (MCRS) is one of the most prominent features on the Bouguer gravity map of the central United States (Figure 1).The rift formed at ~1.1 Ga, recorded by two pulses of magmatic activity lasting ~15 Myr [White, 1997], making it one of the most extensive paleorifts in the world [Hinze et al., 1997].The Midcontinent Rift System May 1985 Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences DOI: 10.1146/annurev.ea.13.050185.002021 Authors: W. Randall …Precise resolution of the timing of igneous activity is crucial to understanding the dynamic processes associated with continental rifting. Mafic intrusive rocks constitute a major portion of the exposed 1100 Ma (Keweenawan) Midcontinent Rift system in northeastern Minnesota; however, prior to this study, geochronological data were insufficient to allow rigorous interpretation of intrusive ...Europe PMC is an archive of life sciences journal literature. https://orcid.org

The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) of North America is one of the world’s largest continental rifts and has an age of 1.1 Ga (giga-annum). The MRS hosts a diverse suite of magmatic and hydrothermal mineral deposits in the Lake Superior region where rift rocks are exposed at or near the surface. As part of the construction of a database …The Jogran copper prospect in southern Ontario, Canada, is located on the northeastern shoulder of the North American Midcontinent rift system where it is centered on two small, closely spaced quartz monzonite porphyry intrusions emplaced into Neoarchean mafic metavolcanic rocks. Notwithstanding an atypical alteration zoning pattern, the ...Introduction. Two prominent Precambrian features of central North America (Fig. 1) record opposite ends of the Wilson cycle. One, the Midcontinent Rift (MCR), is a 3000-km long horseshoe-shaped band of more than 2 million km 3 of buried igneous and sedimentary rocks that outcrop near Lake Superior (Ojakangas et al., 2001; S. Stein et al., 2018). To the south, it is buried by younger sediments ...The major rift-bounding structure on the west side of the Midcontinent Rift System in Kansas is referred to as the Peace Creek Tectonic Zone (fig. 1; Berendsen and Blair, 1986). It is recognizable in the subsurface in southern Kansas, but cannot be mapped into the Salina basin, because of the paucity of available data.Jul 30, 2018 · The graphic, inset, shows gravity mapping done of the Midcontinent Rift System by the U.S. Geological Survey: “MRS volcanic rocks (shown as warmer, reddish colors) that occupy the center of the rift are more dense than the MRS sedimentary rocks (shown as cooler bluish colors) that flank both sides of the volcanics.”

Stein proposes a three-armed rift system, formed of the Midcontinent Rift and the two arms that split Laurentia and Amazonia. "In a lot of locations, when the continents break apart you seem to ...The resistivity signature of the 1.1 Ga Mid-continent Rift System is examined in detail, in particular as relates to rift geometry, extent, and segmentation. An unrecognized expanse of (concealed) Proterozoic deltaic deposits in Kansas is identified and speculated to result from axial drainage along the southwest rift arm akin to the Rio Grande ... ….

The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) or Keweenawan Rift is a 2,000 km (1,200 mi) long geological rift in the center of the North American continent and south-central part of the North American plate. It formed when the continent's core, the North American craton , began to split apart during the Mesoproterozoic era of the Precambrian , about 1.1 ...The Keweenaw fault is perhaps the most significant fault associated with the Midcontinent Rift System of the north-central United States. The discovery and exploitation of rich native copper deposits in the Keweenawan volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Lake Superior region in the mid-nineteenth century led to extensive mapping of the Keweenawan Supergroup rocks along the shore of Lake Superior, its islands, and adjacent areas (e.g., Irving, 1883 ...

Abstract. The Middle Proterozoic Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) of North America is a failed rift that formed in response to region-wide stresses about 1,100 Ma. In Iowa, the MRS is buried beneath 2,200–3,500 ft of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and Quaternary glaciogenic deposits.Volcanism within the North American Midcontinent Rift between ca. 1109 and 1083 Ma, as well as other contemporaneous volcanism within Laurentia, has provided an opportunity to develop extensive paleomagnetic data sets spanning this time period.
